Mud+Fire+Hills+Heat = Warriors Unite!!!

Hmmm….what can I say about July! One word HOT!! For most of July and a first few days of August, Kansas City area (and pretty much most of the region) was in the middle of a never-ending heat wave. Here are some numbers:

• Streak - As of August 3rd, we had 20 straight days of 90F+ degree weather with heat indices pretty much in the triple digits most days.
• Record – KC had it’s hottest day in 25 years on August 2 where the downtown temp hit 107F!!! I did happen to be outside that evening, just not running :)
• Hot Run - Had my hottest run of the season at a steamy 103F..and pretty sure heat index of like 110F!!! Heat Training at its best!
• Serious Sweat – Lost 2.5lbs after a 5miler at 98F!

Great time to be in training right?!! BUT, the show must go one. There was a mix of treadmill and road running through July. All completed in either my Saucony Kinvara’s or Vibram KSOs. There were solid runs, but also some missed ones :( I renewed my gym membership and so its back to strength training as well. The best news is that I am still running strong in the minimalist shoes and have no shin pain! Yes, there have been tight calf and Achilles, but that is when I tend to slack off on stretching post run…my bad :( I’ve worked up to 8miles with the Kinvara’s and 5.5mi with the Vibrams. I need a few more solid long runs to get ready for the upcoming North Face Half Marathon on August 28. Its been a very long time since my last road race, but its a stepping race towards the October 50k!

The best part of July was of course WARRIOR DASH!!! This was the first time the Warrior Dash race was brought to Kansas City and it was a total blast! Fun team, crazy obstacles, creeks, fire and of course MUD…how could it not be awesome!! I wish I could just go over each step of it…but that would take way to much time!! So instead let me share the YouTube video teammate Brady created! Thanks Brady, it’s great to be able to relive it all!!
